The Technical SEO Foundation Most Websites Get Wrong
Content and backlinks get most of the attention, but a weak technical foundation quietly caps how far SEO efforts can go. Here's what to check first.
It's common to see businesses invest heavily in content and link building while their site has fundamental technical issues holding back rankings entirely. Before optimizing content, it's worth confirming the technical foundation isn't working against you.
Crawlability and indexing
Search engines can only rank pages they can crawl and index. Check your robots.txt and sitemap.xml for accidental exclusions, review Search Console for indexing errors, and confirm important pages aren't blocked by noindex tags left over from staging environments.
Site speed and Core Web Vitals
Page speed affects both rankings and conversion rates. Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift and Interaction to Next Paint are measurable, specific targets, not vague 'make it faster' goals. Image optimization, code splitting and reducing unnecessary JavaScript are usually the highest-leverage fixes.
URL structure and canonicalization
Duplicate content from inconsistent URL structures, with and without trailing slashes, with tracking parameters, across HTTP and HTTPS, dilutes ranking signal across multiple URLs instead of consolidating it. Canonical tags and consistent internal linking resolve this.
Structured data
Schema markup doesn't guarantee rich results, but it gives search engines clearer signal about what a page represents, an article, a service, a product, an FAQ. This is particularly valuable for service businesses competing in local and international search.
Mobile-first reality
Google indexes the mobile version of your site by default. A desktop-optimized experience with a compromised mobile version isn't just a UX problem, it's a ranking ceiling.
